Introduction
Over time, mattresses accumulate dust, dirt, mould, and unpleasant odours. Regular cleaning is essential to maintaining a healthy sleeping environment. This simple yet effective DIY cleaning recipe will help you refresh your mattress, remove stains, and eliminate unwanted smells—all with natural ingredients.
Ingredients
1 cup baking soda
10 drops essential oil (lavender, tea tree, or eucalyptus)
½ cup cornstarch (optional, for extra odour absorption)
½ cup white vinegar (for spot cleaning)
A vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment
A sifter or fine-mesh strainer
A spray bottle (for vinegar if needed)
Directions
Prepare the Cleaning Powder
In a small bowl, mix the baking soda, cornstarch (if using), and essential oil. Stir well to evenly distribute the oil.
Apply to Mattress
Use a sifter to evenly sprinkle the cleaning powder across the mattress surface. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes to absorb odours and moisture.
Vacuum Thoroughly
Using a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment, thoroughly remove the powder from the mattress. Ensure all residue is cleared to prevent buildup.
Spot Clean Stains (If Needed)
For tough stains, lightly spray white vinegar on the affected area and blot with a clean cloth. Allow it to dry completely before using the bed.
Final Freshening
For an extra fresh scent, lightly mist the mattress with a mixture of water and essential oil before placing sheets back on.
Serving and Storage Tips
Use this cleaning method once a month for the best results.
Store any leftover baking soda mixture in an airtight container for future use.
