Homemade Vanilla Cake with Buttercream Frosting

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy and smooth.
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. Beat in the vanilla extract.
  4. Add heavy cream or milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches your desired consistency. You may need more or less depending on how thick you want the frosting to be.
  5. If desired, add a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness of the frosting.

Assembly:

  1. Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand.
  2. Spread a layer of buttercream frosting evenly over the top of the first cake layer.
  3. Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining buttercream frosting.
  4. Decorate the cake as desired with sprinkles, fresh fruit, or edible flowers.
