- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with butter.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs and the butter is pea-sized.
- Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the cold buttermilk.
- Using a fork or spatula, gently stir the buttermilk into the flour mixture until just combined and a soft dough forms. Be careful not to overmix.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Pat the dough into a rectangle about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.
- Fold the dough in half and pat it out again to the same thickness. Repeat this folding and patting process two more times.
- Using a floured biscuit cutter or a sharp knife, cut out biscuits from the dough and place them onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each biscuit.
- Gather any scraps of dough, pat them out, and cut out more biscuits until all the dough is used.
- Brush the tops of the biscuits with a little buttermilk for a golden finish, if desired.
- Bake the biscuits in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until they are golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove the biscuits from the oven and let them cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving.
Enjoy your homemade butter buttermilk biscuits warm from the oven, with a pat of butter or your favorite jam. They're perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a side with soups and stews.
